If these walls could talk

Hello. I'm the placement office and the job and practicum fair. There's this one student who never showed up before, but now, he's been going in and out, back and forth, over and under doing all sorts of things here for the past week. It seems that whenever I wake up, he's there, or sometime's, he moves like the Flash that I couldn't see him. Sure, I could understand if he's scheduled to go here, but no. He just keeps being in or along my existence. The maximum hours for volunteering was six hours right? But he's like there for more than that, 20 I suppose? What's up with that? Does he have a strange obsession for inanimate places like me?

Hi, I'm Karnabal. I replaced that boring old picture of Meteor Rain on the left and replaced it with the best wrestler in the WWE. And if you have your speakers on, with my theme music. I'm not sure if that person in the glasses, ponytail and looked like Ken Zhu liked me. He kept on talking to his seatmate and making strange comments when I showed YB. He did watch eagerly when I presented my other two plays. I wonder why? He seemed surprised when the angsty, bad girl came up on stage. He was saying "Oh my heck!" and almost fell off his seat. And probably, he'll never watch a VCD in the near future due to me.

Job and Practicum Fair

So I've been working in the Job Fair for the past few days, looking like according to people: Sir Vince Serrano, Sir Mark Escaler, an encyclopedia salesman, or like one person said, human. :)

And it has been GREAT! I love handling stuff, doing things to help the companies & the placement office, meeting new friends and of course, the free food. Sure, it was tiring, and you were under the hot sun but when all the people surrounding you act like they were your brothers and sisters (in ABS-CBN's terms --- Kapamilya) then all those hours seemed like seconds. I'm just having fun!

I even spent more than 12 hours already in three days! One of my "bosses" even commented that she already got sick of seeing me there because she always sees me around. And I really was there most of the time. When you really love the job (and I don't even see it as a job -- more like hanging out with your barkada), you don't want to part with it.

It's similar to what I told someone in the entrance the reason why I looked so happy all the time --- "Pag pumasok sila sa Job Fair tapos hindi ka nakangiti, baka mawalan ng gana ang mga estudyanteng pumunta dito at mag-apply sa mga kompanya. At hindi natin iyon gusto di ba? At lalo na kung bad day sila, make at least this moment good for them."

Of course, those extra hours are not recorded. And I don't care if they are not recorded. That's not my goal.

I went to the 4:30 pm P&G seminar to fix the venue up, talk to the P&G people, do the techie stuff --- yes, I volunteered to help out.

Funny moment: I was asked by my senior compatriots what committee I signed up for. I said that I signed up for IT in my application form. She told me to go to Logistics because it suits my performance so far. Then I replied, "Don't worry, flexible naman si Milo." Those who heard me laughed, in a good way, a bit. One of them said that "speaking in the third-person ka pa." Fun moment, just wanted to share.

Aside from the technical difficulties in the beginning, everything turned out great to the point that the students were a bit dismayed when we had to end the seminar quickly because there was a class that was going to use the place.

And yes, I'm going to go all out tomorrow. Tomorrow's going to be my last "official" working day for the Job Fair as I didn't sign up for any shift on Friday. But who knows, if they need people, I might just show up.

Hope I pass this second stage of becoming a placement rep!

Broken

Superstition or no superstition, a pre-game ritual sometimes makes wonders for an athlete's game.

In the NBA, many players have pre-game rituals, Amaré Stoudemire lifts weights just before the game and eats a good meal about 2 hours before the game. Ron Mercer reads the Bible before the game. Mike Bibby does everything from left to right: puts his shoes on from left to right, gets taped from left to right.

It's like shooting the free throw. You need to develop a certain rhythm in your system. In the NBA, Jason Kidd kisses the crowd, Karl Malone mutters stuff to himself, Jeff Hornacek wipes his cheek, Steve Nash licks his hand and brushes his hair and more.

And I believe I do have some too --- like my hard triple ball bounce in the free throw line.

Break a ritual, everything goes wrong. Much like what happened to me today.

My Wednesday ritual: Wake up at 7:30, watch and do Bodies and Motion, eat breakfast, take a bath and stuff, dress up, go to school around 10, grab a Milo Freezz at the caf, enjoy Joe's cell group, and enjoy Philosophy.

Unfortunately, that ritual got torn into pieces. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I arrived in school today at 6:00 am. That means, cancel the Bodies in Motion thing. (1) And I realize I forgot my ID, so I went back home to get it. I got back in Ateneo at around 9:00. I went to the restrooms to fix my hair, (2) then there I found out that my comb went missing. Then, I got my usual Milo Freezz at the caf. I went up Caf Up near 10:30 to have cell group. Unfortunately, due to lack of people, Joe cancelled the cell group. I ate lunch, and after that, (3) I accidentally ingested three stuck Listerine Pocket Pak strips at the same time. When I had my Philosophy class, (4) Jerome sat beside me (which is not his seat) and constantly annoyed me with redundant questions --- thus removing the joy in Philo. Probably, that is why I didn't feel playing billiards later on. Earl didn't show up. No Yeah's and Justices resounded in the place. (5) And for the very first time in months, exactly from July 24 2003, to January 14 2004, Migs defeated me in billiards, 5-3. Well, it had to happen someday.

Probably, this is what people call an off-night, or off-day in this case. Oh well, c'est la vie.

There is more to life than this...

Onomatomanias

The first week back in school held nothing special except for an A in my second plate in my Basic Illustration as Visual Narrative class. I hope the trend continues.

Ok class, the word for today is onomatomania. It is an obsession with a particular word which the person uses repeatedly or which intrudes into consciousness. Much like a last song syndrome.

These past weeks, these ten words keep reverberating in my mind --- so don't be surprised when I suddenly blurt out any of these words at any time in whatever context.

1. Stacie Orrico --- so that's two words, in fact a name of a singer. Her first three singles off her self-titled sophomore album have been playing inside my head. Yes, I do have her album now. And I love it.

2. Palanca --- the writing contest I dream to win at least once. And I will. (not boasting here.)

3. Yeah! --- the daily Earl Strickland tribute.

4. Power --- Blame Michael Jackson's "Don't stop till you get enough"
(and I found a website containing misheard lyrics of this song --- and they're pretty funny)
  • Misheard: Don't stop till you get it up / Correct:
Don't stop till you get enough
  • Misheard: Get off with a porn star, don't stop till you get enough / Correct: Keep up with the force, don't don't stop til you get enough
No wonder people think Jacko is wacko.

    5. Moonshadow --- A Mandy Moore song from her album Coverage, and probably her next single off that album.

    6. DL --- Dean's lister, every student's dream.

    7. Surprising --- the first Penshoppe slogan when they used Mandy Moore as their model

    8. Pabilis nang pabilis --- Part of the song in cute commercial by Coke where two girls are playing a game to see who gets the Coke.

    9. Happenstance --- I don't know why.

    10. Sims --- I just love creating skins for the Sims, a popular PC game. Want to be in the game friends?

    Movie Titles

    The Neverending Story
The story of two friends who love playing billiards. One holds a winning streak for five months. The other vows to have his revenge before classes start. The vengeful one goes to Tagaytay and practices for three days. When the long-awaited rematch ended, the winning streak still remains intact, with a final score of 5-0.

    The Empire Strikes Back
The empire is looming around the corner... Tomorrow, it will attack and wreak havoc once more on the lives of thousands of students. It's the end of the Christmas Break! mwahahaha!

    Mystic River
Those same students in the earlier movie have come across a river of homework that was given before the break. Now, the river seemingly wouldn't end.

    The Return of the Jedi
Guys! I missed you so much. See you in school once again!

    Preparation

What do you do when your friend practices billiards in Tagaytay to finally exact his revenge after "humiliating" him for the past 5 months?

    Hmmmm... practice of course!

I played 9-ball with my dad earlier. Boy, I really needed the practice as we banged that two ball around the table for like twenty minutes in the first rack. Of course, things started to pick up as the game progressed.

I didn't release the Earl attitude during the game. Or maybe a little... with the fist pumping gestures.

Luckily, I managed to replicate the games Migs and I had for the last 5 months. I got the V, 5-1. Will I be able to replicate it tomorrow? I hope so.

    ===filmfest===

I watched two filmfest movies during the Christmas break, namely the best picture Crying Ladies, and the second best picture Mano Po 2.

I believe that many people wouldn't agree that Crying Ladies should have won the best picture. And I believed that to a certain extent when I watched Mano Po 2 (way better than the first).

Mano Po 2 outclassed Crying Ladies in terms of story. Crying Ladies didn't have much of a story, just three sub-stories with little emotion entertwined in a basic main story of being "crying ladies" to a Chinese funeral. I didn't feel anything, either laughter or sadness, after watching the movie. MP2, on the other hand, had a main powerful emotion-driven story as a backbone accompanied with flashbacks to make the main story clearer.

But other than that, I believe Crying Ladies got the award due to its lack of flaws, or at least, very minimal ones. Questions brought up like the burning house issue was quickly resolved a few minutes after. The semi-circular story of the shades was pretty smart. Plus, everyone who spoke Chinese in the film spoke it clearly, fluently and with the right accent. Yes, even Eric Quizon spoke his lines like he was a true Chinese who hated the fact that he was Chinese. I just didn't like the product plugs in the movie ---> sponsor kasi. They got their tagline "a heartwarming comedy" semi-right... can't find the heartwarming there.

Mano Po 2... I still couldn't resolve the driver's reaction to Christopher de Leon's (his amo) death. I was shouting like, "Don't just stand there! Bring him to the hospital!" Yet, there he was beside the open car, standing there, even listened first to his last words, stood there again, and then ran away (making it seem that the driver was part of the crime instead of a random acts of kidnapping). The Filipino actors' chinese was not as bad much like the first (it didn't sound Japanese like the first one) but wrong accents plagued their speech. The plot didn't resolve questions right away. Thirty minutes into the film, I wasn't still sure who was the mom of each kid. Bad casting also hit Mano Po 2. Who would believe that Alessandra de Rossi was part-Chinese when she in fact looks more Indian with her features and dark skin? And two authentic Chinese parents (real Chinese actor/actress) giving birth to a son who looks like Christopher de Leon (who looks Filipino and nothing like his parents)? Plus, and a big plus, the eyelids of Christopher de Leon moved in one scene where he was in the COFFIN! (it's a miracle!) They should change their title though. Pagmamano was only done, I think, once in the film.

Both films were cleanly made, no wild transitions or choppy scenes. CGI usage was well suited for both films respectively.

And probably, that is why Crying Ladies bagged Best Picture.

    Looking Back

don't look at me if you're looking for perfection. I will only let you down. Look at Him

2003 was a great year. Even though someone may point out things/people that tarnished the clean slate I laid out, I've already forgotten them. I'm not perfect, in the same light that no one can please everyone.

I can proudly say that I was blessed tenfold in 2003. And I'd like to thank all the things, events, animals, circumstances, happenstance, everything, everyone especially people (yes, even those who dislike me) & of course, God, who made 2003 a memorable year for me.

Another clean slate has been laid out for this year. I hope things will continue looking up. And of course, I won't sit around waiting things to turn upward.

and I will be made whole again

    ----
    THE SIMS
I love the game! If you want to be in my game, just tell me, send me a frontal face picture. It's fun playing with little sims of yourself and your friends! See below...

Sim Bea playing the piano really good, just like in real life! Now, if I could only find a clarinet...

Sim Jen in a practice session for a gig later in Studio Town. As if she needs practice. =)

    -----
    Billiards
Migs just challenge me to a pool match before classes start. He's been practicing for hours in Tagaytay, while me, just here doing homework. Will he finally beat me after 5 months of weekly pool?

When will the World Championship Pool game for the PS2 get here???? I want a copy!
